Clyde M. Doughty, Jr. Athletic Director 2015 – 2026

Dr. Clyde Doughty, Jr., joined Bowie State University in 2015 as Director of Athletics and later served as Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation beginning in 2018. Throughout his tenure, he transformed the department through strategic leadership, facility enhancements, and a steadfast commitment to student-athlete success. Under his leadership, Bowie State completed several major athletics facility improvements, including the installation of the Kevin Durant Court at A.C. Jordan Arena, new locker rooms, a student-athlete nutrition lounge, resurfaced tennis courts, and track upgrades that positioned the university to host conference championship events.

Since 2015, Bowie State Athletics has experienced unprecedented success, capturing six CIAA women’s bowling championships, three CIAA football championships, three CIAA softball championships, and one CIAA men’s basketball championship. Additionally, the women’s basketball program advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16, further elevating the university’s national profile.

His leadership and impact were recognized nationally and throughout the conference. Doughty was named President of the CIAA Management Council, serving from 2017-2021 and again selected for the 2025-26 term. He also received numerous honors, including the CIAA Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Administrator Award (2022), Cushman & Wakefield Athletic Director of the Year (2022), and CIAA Athletic Director of the Year honors in 2017, 2018-19, and 2021-22.

On the national level, Doughty was an active and respected leader within intercollegiate athletics, serving with NACDA Division II, the Division II Athletic Directors Association Board, the Common Grounds Board, the Return on Inclusion Board, and the NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award Committee.

Prior to joining Bowie State University, Doughty dedicated 38 years to the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) as both a student-athlete and athletics administrator. As a member of the NYIT men’s basketball team, he helped lead the Bears to NCAA Division II Tournament appearances in 1978 and 1980. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management, along with two master’s degrees in Human Resource Management and Human Relations from NYIT.

At the time of his passing, Doughty was pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership at Bowie State University. The university posthumously awarded him his doctorate in recognition of his impactful dissertation titled, “The Impact of Enslavement, Education, Segregation, and Desegregation on the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and the African American Athlete.”

Above all, Doughty will be remembered for his passion for mentorship, leadership, and service. He is survived by his wife, Pamela; his children, Brandon, Jessica, and Andre; extended family members in New York; and countless colleagues, alumni, students, and friends whose lives were impacted by his guidance and generosity.

Doughty often encouraged others to “enjoy the moment,” a message he shared with an unforgettable smile that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
