JAMES BARNEY WATERS AWARD
The Honorable Dr. John Organ
Lynchburg, Virginia
Dr. John M. Organ received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Virginia State University in Health, Physical Education and Recre-
ation; received his Master of Education Degree from Lynchburg College in Physical Education; and received his Doctorate Degree
from George Washington University in Administration.
Dr. John M. Organ has taught Health, Physical Education and Sports Management at Bowie State University since 1976. He was
Athletic Director at Bowie from 1980 until 1985, and Head Football Coach from 1976 until 1985, all while maintaining a full trach-
ing load.
Dr. Organ was responsible for Bowie's gaining entrance into the Central Intercolliege Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference after
talking to former President Dr. Rufus Barfield with the idea. Once the idea was approved, the President found out Bowie did not
have funds for the entrance fee. This did not stop Dr. Organ because providing our students' with this opportunity to join the CIAA
was extremely important. As the head football coach, he discussed the problem with the football team and how they could help
Bowie State join the CIAA Conference. They were willing to play away games so they could raise every dollar for the guarantees.
These young men made the sacrifice for dear old Bowie and without them the current student-athletes and coaches would not be en-
joying the fruits from those defeats.
Prior to coming to Bowie State, Dr. Organ taught at Howard University where he was an Assistant Football Coach, Head Wrestling
and Golf Coach. His wrestling teams won six Championships, 3 CIAA and 3 MEAC, during his six years of coaching. Additional-
ly, the golf teams won four Championships in six years of competition. Dr. Organ won and received numerous coaching awards
from the Western District Football Association in Virginia, CIAA, MEAC, and NAIA.
Dr. Organ was selected as an official to referee Regional District Wrestling Championships from 1966 until 2000. He received other
honors including the NAIA District Football Coach of the Year in 1978; the DC Coach of the Year in 1978; received the DC Coach-
es Association Football Appreciation Award in 1981; the AKA Outstanding Leadership Award in 1991; appointed to the Montgom-
ery County Physical Fitness Commission in 1986; and induction into the Lynchburg, Virginia Chamber of Commerce area Sports
Hall of Fame in 1997.
Dr. Organ and Dr. Stewart wrote and presented Bowie State's Sports Management Program which was approved by the USM Board
of Regents and Maryland Higher Education Commission in the fall of 2007. The Sports Management Program includes eight (8)
concentrations in Business (4) and in Communication (4). Nighty eight percent of the graduates have 3.00 GPA or better.
Dr. Organ says his main objective has been to help provide our students with a quality education. "I feel and always have felt; if I
would not want my children to be poorly treated I could not stand silent while other parents' children are not Bowie's first priority."

FOOTBALL 1972-74 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD* HOF 2016
Congratulations! The Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame Alumni Chapter is pleased to announce your selection as the 2016 recipient of the J. Sidney Sheppard - Lifetime Achievement Award. This special award is given to former Bowie State athletes who have demonstrated a commitment to both Bowie State Athletics and the Bowie State Alumni Association.
As a Bulldog, in 1972 you were among the first group of young men to reestablish the football program and who ushered in the new era of collegiate level football being played at Bowie State, after a lengthy absence. Although, the football team's overall record was 2 victories and 4 loses, the team's spirited play attracted football players who had not considered Bowie State as a football option. Your recently inducted 1972 Sports Hall of Fame Football Team, laid a solid foundation for the football program.
In 1973, you played a key role in advocating for the newly sanctioned football program. You personally helped to organize your teammates to affect changes in pre-season housing conditions and meal services. The day long lead protest which boycotted practices yielded immediate results. Your service, as a key spokesman, helped to negotiate better overall conditions with housing, meals, and the treatment of your teammates.
Your time on the grid iron concluded and several years after your graduation, you returned to Bowie State as an adjunct professor and devoted over sixteen years of service to teaching Bowie State students.
You continued your service to the Bowie State community and in 2012, you were elected as President of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association, Inc. (BSUNAA). Your service as President led to an over 100% resurgence in Alumni memberships and participation. Your specific focus on increasing Alumni Lifetime Memberships generated an over 300% increase in this membership category over a three-year period.
In 2013 under your leadership, the BSUNAA established the Sports Hall of Fame as a committee, thereby reestablishing the Hall of Fame. The committee inducted its first Sports Hall of Fame Class in 2014 with 16 Individual Members and the 1972 Football Team. Since, the Sports Hall of Fame Committee has become a fully sanctioned Alumni Chapter and has inducted 32 Individual Members and 3 Teams. The induction of these individuals and teams represent the honoring of over 150 former Bowie State Athletes.
