HERBERT L. BALLARD * BASKETBALL 1962-1966 * HOF 2015

Education

Mr. Ballard attended Bowie State College from 1961-1966 and majored in Secondary Education with a concentration in Math.  Mr. Ballard served as the President of the Student Body and Vice President of the Jr. Class.  Just to name a few of his academic achievements included attending the Washington Post Small College All- Maryland Team and All Maryland in scoring from 1962-1963.  He made all conferences in his Jr. and Sr. year and All Tournament Teams.  His most outstanding effort was against Delaware State - 0 points 1st half - 30 points in the second half.

Mr. Ballard’s professional career consisted of the following organizations and titles; Teacher of Math for 5 years in Baltimore County, Sears and General Electric.  Mr. Ballard had been with MNCPPC for 28 years.  Mr. Ballard is a widower of Mrs. Pauletta C. Ballard (former Ms. Bowie State).  He has (4) children, Michele A. Mendez, Myron A. Ballard, Maria A. Ballard and Adrian Delesi, (3) grandchildren, Arbette, Arliss, and Jay Mendez.

Mr. Ballard’s Highlight - When I became a starter my freshman year, then I knew I belong on the college level.

  • Four year letterman in both Football and Baseball from 1972 to 1975

EDUCATION

Craig A. Brown of Annapolis, M.D. graduated from Bowie State College in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. WE NEED POST BOWIE EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION

ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENT 

Craig began his athletic career at the age of 5 pitching in a 6 & 7 year old youth softball league. In high school, Craig was an all-county 4A soccer player. At Bowie State, he recorded more wins as a pitcher than any pitcher in Bowie State history (19) and had the most wins (6) in a season twice (1981 & 1982). Mr. Brown started in 3 double headers and over the 4 years he played all positions except center field and catcher. During his college career, Bowie State baseball team: 1980 the team made it to the NAIA District Tournament, 1981 Bowie State received runner-up in the District NAIA Tournament.1982 Bowie State entered the CIAA and won the Championship & 1983, as the team captain the team was runner-up in the CIAA Tournament where he pitched an entire game for a win against St. Paul. Craig had a career batting average of .370 (high of .433 in 1983).  Moreover, as a two sport letterman, Craig also holds the record for the longest punt of 82 yards for the Bowie State Football Team.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND ORGANIZATIONS 

In his community, Craig is simply known as Coach. A named bestowed to him by generations of boys and girls that he has coached throughout the years. He served as coach for Bywater Boys & Girls Club (B&GC), Columbia Park Rec. and Glenarden B&GC (Football, Basketball & Soccer).  Craig is also AAU coach who has coached for  PG Jaguars AAU boys basketball team and currently coaches for Team SOL AAU girls basketball. Craig’s community service extents to his church the First Baptist Church of Glenarden(FBCG) where he faithfully serves on the Male Choir, feed the hungry ministry, Sunday School Teacher and Brothers In Discipleship (BID) ministry.

Craig is a member of Omega Psi Phi and served as a SGA Treasurer.

He has worked over 30 years in the Accounting and Finance field where he is currently a Business Finance Manager for the Department of the Navy.

Craig is married to his college sweetheart Angela and they have 2 children Justin and Bianca, and is the proud grandparent his lovely granddaughter Kayla.

MARVIN JACKSON *BASEBALL 1971-1975* HOF 2015

EDUCATION

  • Bowie State College/University - 1970 to 1974.  Majored in Political Science.  

Received Bachelor of Arts 1974.

ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

  • His career began in 1971 starting every game as a Freshman Outfielder and Pitcher for the Bowie State.  This was the first Bowie State Baseball Team to have an overall winning record according to then Head Coach James “Lefty” Wilkerson.  Bowie State won the regular season Potomac Intercollegiate Conference Championship against such baseball small college powers at the time as George Mason and Frostburg State, and finished as runnerup in the Conference Tournament.  
  • In 1972 and 1973, he starting every game and led the team in base hits, walks, batting average, runs scored, and was a team leader in stolen bases, pitching victories and relief appearances. 
  • He led the starting outfielders during his career in defensive fielding percentage and assists, and his streak of playing every inning of every game from February 1971 until a career ending injury in April 1974, may be the longest in Bulldogs baseball history.  He is a two-time Baseball Most Valuable Player in 1972 and in 1973, and he was team captain in 1973 and in 1974, which was an injury shortened senior season.     
  • He was scouted by the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants Major League Baseball teams until his injury in 1974.
  • Maryland Industrial League and the Southern Maryland Independent Baseball League for over 10 years with several championship teams starting with Brandywine A.C.  He led the league in hits, doubles, batting average, fielding, runs scored numerous times in his career.  He led the league in home runs, batting average, doubles, and was the League’s Most Valuable Player in 1983.  He also was named the League’s Best Sportsman, and was selected to the All Star team every year.

Highlights

Over 14 years of football coaching experience in Prince George's County, Maryland. Taught,

mentored, and coached over 400 student athletes. Most of the young men (predominately

African Americans) graduated from high school to attend and graduate from two year and four

year colleges/universities. Eight of the young men advanced to play professional football (active rosters and/or practice squads).

JOHN SIDNEY SHEPPARD *FATHER OF THE HALL OF FAME* BASKETBALL

EDUCATION

John Sidney Sheppard, aka J. Sidney Sheppard, attended the Maryland State Teachers College at Bowie, known today as Bowie State University.  He graduated from Bowie in 1947, with a Degree in Education, which was four years behind his original classmates due to a tour of duty in the United States Army during World War II.  Mr. Sheppard received an honorable discharge at the rank of Second Lieutenant.

Mr. Sheppard went on to earn a Master's Degree in Physical Education in 1954 from New York University.

ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

Mr. Sheppard is a four year lettermen in Men's Basketball and after serving his time in the U.S. Army, he was proclaimed as one of the most outstanding players on the team.  Mr. Sheppard is widely recognized as the "Father" of the Bowie State College Hall of Fame because it was at his direction, as President of the Bowie State College Alumni Association, that the Bowie State College Hall of Fame was reconstituted. 

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND ORGANIZATIONS

Mr. Sheppard is a former, twice elected, President of the Bowie State University Alumni Association, Inc. and a Lifetime Member.  He is a Member of the Fred Carroll Alumni Chapter and he is a Member and Former Chairman of the BSU Foundation.  Sidney Sheppard is also a Former member and Chairman of the Bowie State College Board of Visitors. 

In addition to being active with BSU, Sidney Sheppard is involved in several other community endeavors.  He is the Executive Director of the William T. Dorsey Educational Fund, an organization that makes an annual monetary contribution to Bowie State.  He was the Executive Director of the David Shockley Foundation, which has an established endowed scholarship at Bowie State University.  He is the Vice President of the Former Students of Robert Moton High School, Inc.  Sidney is a member of James Mosher Associates, one of Baltimore's outstanding little league associations.  He managed a team for James Mosher  for over 12 years and also served as the organization's President, Chairman of the Board, General Manager, Commissioner, and Secretary.  Mr. Sheppard is also a founding member of the Zeus, Inc., a men's social and service club, and is an active member of the White Rock United Methodist Church in Sykesville.

Mr. Sheppard served for over 37 years as a Teacher, Coach, and Administrator in the State of Maryland's Public School system, with his last assignment as the Department Chair of Physical Education at Calverton Junior High in Baltimore.   

FAMILY

Sidney was married to Evelyn Pritchett, Class of 1947, for 37 years until her death in August 1988.  Sidney and Evelyn had two children, John Sidney Sheppard, Jr. (deceased) and Traci Sheppard Allotey.  Sidney is a proud grandfather to three - Lori Sheppard, Kaaya Allotey, and Cameron Allotey.
